This weekend I was totally charmed by  Avila Beach and its small-town, Mystic Pizza vibe. At the main pier, you can fish off the docks, buy fresh-caught crab out of a bucket, or watch the pelicans and sea lions sunning themselves.

EATING

Best find: Fat Cats Cafe. Set in a listing trailer on the Avila Beach pier, Fat Cats has delicious linguica sausage (a sweeter, less-grainy version of chorizo and, in my heretical opinion, even better); lobster benedicts; and pancakes the size of your head. Plus eggs every way and good diner coffee.

Good to know: Get there before ten, when a line starts at the door.

For waterfront dining: The Old Porte Inn at the end of the pier is a good place for dinner if you order the fresh catch of the day, simply grilled. We sat at a glass topped table with a view of the  water below (for the record, the only thing we saw was some kelp that my husband thought was a sting ray.

Good to know: This is a tourist hot spot, so get a reservation.

Good to know: The pelicans are obviously used to being fed—a lot. They'll try to steal your bait if you're fishing off the pier. Left: sea lions sunning at Avila Beach Pier

Even better to know:
Two of the pier's boat landings have been swamped by sea lions. While they are entertaining to watch from above, don't walk down unless you're willing to get chomped.

Note: Be warned if you book a room at The Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach: They charge resort prices for motel rooms that lack that dumpy motel charm.

Comments

I am the Sales and Marketing Director for the Cliffs Resort and I obviously am concerned about the comments you (Anna Nordberg) have written:

"Red Flag: Be warned if you book a room at The Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach: They charge resort prices for motel rooms that lack that dumpy motel charm."

I don't see that anyone has ever had a reservation under the name of Anna Nordberg, so I am curious what room you stayed in. I would like to review the condition of the room at the very least.

I have never heard anyone compare The Cliffs to a motel and certainly never a dumpy one, so I would like to know a little more about your experience, if you wouldn't mind being helpful. It is very important to us that guests enjoy their stay and want to return, so obviously, these kinds of public comments are alarming.

Thank you for your comment, Lee, and we appreciate your feedback. I understand that the prices at the Cliffs reflect beach access, but I feel that they are overpriced given the quality of the rooms. The reason you could not find my reservation is that I stayed under my married name.

I recommend staying at the Inn at Avila Beach. I was hooked as soon as I walked into their very unique lobby area and was further blown away after spending a good portion of the evening on their roof deck. The roof deck is basically divided into 3 or 4 outdoor living rooms with TVs so you can watch one of the movies you borrowed earlier from the video library down in the lobby area. There is also a BBQ on the roof deck in case you want to have an all out party there. And of course you can just enjoy the view of the beach and/or listen to the waves crashing down. And it's a very short drive to San Luis Obispo which is nice.
